01 / Building stories

Read a building, discover a way of living.

The Águas Livres water system was ordered in 1731 and construction began the following year to improve Lisbon’s supply. It crosses municipal boundaries; Amadora’s records identify a long section of the main line within the municipality. Damaia’s arches give visible scale to an often overlooked supply relationship.

Repeated piers translate continuity of water into architectural rhythm. Distant sources, land and maintenance workers connect cities and support ordinary life.

What to notice

Observe arches and terrain from safe public ground. The reference point is not an entrance to the top; interior and underground passages are not freely accessible.

02 / I Ching reflections

Jing · Notice the people behind supply

Water passes through many places and much work before reaching its users. Reading a supply structure can renew appreciation for services taken for granted.

Start with the architecture

The arcade has a visible rhythm and a practical history. Move from the sequence of piers to a joint or change of direction. Reading form together with function brings infrastructure into our understanding of the city.

Bring the question into everyday life

Maintenance often becomes visible only when something breaks. Choose a familiar service and consider reducing waste, reporting faults precisely or respecting its maintainers. Small practical actions sustain shared reliability.

Try an observation here

Follow several piers with your gaze and consider the different people needed to maintain continuous supply.

A contemporary cultural reading by Xiaoxiong inspired by the I Ching. The connection with the building is an editorial perspective, not the architect’s intention or a documented historical influence. It is not fortune-telling.

03 / Nearby life

Dining map records within three kilometres in a straight line of the reference point. Walls, railways and slopes may lengthen the journey. Check the entrance and whether the business is open.

The map may omit businesses. Records do not confirm trading status, menus or bookings. Records with an address are shown by default; you can include the others.
