01 / Building stories
Read a building, discover a way of living.
The main Recreios building opened on 17 August 1914 through the initiative of the Santos Mattos corset factory’s operators. Tennis courts and a roller-skating rink had already opened in 1912. Municipal records connect the venue with the city’s social and sporting history.
After several alterations, it reopened following works in 1997 and now hosts cinema, theatre and temporary exhibitions. Begin its story after the working day: a city also needs places to gather, play, learn and watch.
What to notice
Observe the relationship between street, entrance and waiting audience. Check the venue’s current programme and admission arrangements.
An easy gathering often depends on space, lighting, rehearsal and organisation. City life grows from people repeatedly preparing these encounters.
Start with the architecture
Street, waiting, seating and return to the city form a sequence organised by the building. Even without a performance, notices and public boundaries suggest the work involved; confirm actual events with the venue.
Bring the question into everyday life
Rest cannot always wait until every task is finished. Shared activities need time deliberately reserved. Someone must initiate, listen and take care of clearing up afterwards too.
Try an observation here
Find an event you would not normally choose and consider whom it serves.
If you reserved one evening a week for a shared activity, what would you choose?
A contemporary cultural reading by Xiaoxiong inspired by the I Ching. The connection with the building is an editorial perspective, not the architect’s intention or a documented historical influence. It is not fortune-telling.

Dining map records within three kilometres in a straight line of the reference point. Walls, railways and slopes may lengthen the journey. Check the entrance and whether the business is open.
The map may omit businesses. Records do not confirm trading status, menus or bookings. Records with an address are shown by default; you can include the others.
