Begun in 1590 to strengthen the defence of Lisbon’s river entrance, the fort was designed by engineer Giovanni Vicenzio Casale. Walls, bastions and a controlled entrance served military needs. Today’s leisure coast does not erase that origin.

上天下泽,履;君子以辨上下,定民志。 Heaven above, lake below: Lü. The noble person distinguishes higher and lower positions and steadies the people’s resolve.
Lü shifts my attention from strength to restraint. A fort controls passage, but control is not automatically legitimate. Understanding defence also means considering people on both sides.

Inside and outside
The same wall shelters a defender and obstructs an arrival. This reading should acknowledge different positions rather than celebrate strength alone.

Approaching today
Respecting present access limits does not prevent questioning historical power. The body may stop at a barrier while reflection continues.

Public memory
Read as heritage, the defensive form remains while its social purpose can change. Boundaries also have a history of reinterpretation.
