The building’s historyFACTS BEFORE INTERPRETATION

Church of Our Lady of the Assumption

The exact foundation date is unknown. The present church relates to rebuilding after 1755 and preserves older religious art, including panels from around 1520–1525 and works by Josefa d’Óbidos transferred later. José Malhoa painted the Assumption on the ceiling in 1900.

泽上于地,萃。
Lake above the earth: Cui.

I read Cui through the periods and people gathered here. A shared space need not imply shared origins: each work’s arrival deserves explanation.

01

Journeys of artworks

A transferred work retains the history of its earlier setting. Its new position adds meaning.

02

Gathering without uniformity

Traces from different periods can coexist without forced stylistic unity.

03

A space still shared

Worshippers and visitors share the place. Looking at art must leave room for worship.

How can works from different periods be gathered without erasing their origins?
