雷在地中，复；先王以至日闭关，商旅不行，后不省方。
Thunder is within the earth: Fu. At the solstice, the former kings closed the passes; merchants did not travel and the ruler did not tour the regions.
Through Fu, rebuilding does not mean reproducing an intact past. Continuing to use, care for and gather after destruction acknowledges loss while making room for new life.
Earthquake and reconstruction both belong to this building. Explaining change is more honest than suggesting undamaged antiquity.
Worship and gathering keep the place in use. Fu suggests continuity as a choice made repeatedly.
New materials and new users can also carry memory. Recognising change helps explain the continuity of a living place.
