01 / BUILDING HISTORYFACTS BEFORE INTERPRETATION
It rewrote a steep slope as public transport
and engineering as an urban portrait.
Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard's project advanced in 1900. The lift opened with steam power in 1902 and was electrified in 1907. Its 45-metre iron structure links the Baixa and Carmo and has been a National Monument since 2002.
