01 / BUILDING HISTORYFACTS BEFORE INTERPRETATION
Founded with royal support,
it proved resilient through earthquake and fire.
Its first stone was laid in 1711. The plan is attributed to João Antunes and the works to João Frederico Ludovice and Custódio Vieira. Opened in 1736, it suffered limited damage in 1755 and sheltered displaced parishes.
