01 / BUILDING HISTORYFACTS BEFORE INTERPRETATION
One of Portugal's earliest Jesuit churches,
it later passed to an urban community of mercy.
Opened in 1573, it is among Portugal's earliest Jesuit churches. Its hall church and eight side chapels express Counter-Reformation planning; the 1587–1589 painted ceiling survives. After the Jesuits' expulsion, the complex passed to the Misericórdia in 1768.
