01 / Building stories

From this place, understand a way of life.

In the mid-sixteenth century, Manuel of Portugal built the first palace. João V bought and enlarged the property in 1726; after 1910, Belém became the official seat of the presidential institution.

Mid-16th century — Manuel of Portugal establishes the first palace and estate.

1726 — João V purchases it for seasonal royal use.

After 1910 — Belém becomes the presidential residence and a setting for state representation.

Where to look first

From public areas, observe the gate, flag and surrounding streets. Look for the transition from royal residence to republican institution. The palace retains official functions; follow the visiting limits published by the institution and posted on site.

02 / I Ching reflections

Why do we read the presidential residence through Qian?

Qian represents active creation and continuing responsibility. Without verifiable action, power retains only the appearance of movement.

Heaven moves with vigour: Qian. — Editorial translation of the excerpt

Read the image first

Heaven moves without pause. Qian invites attention to active, continuing strength. Strength has to become action: does a building with public duties still show whom it works for?

Original text and context

This excerpt gives the natural image that opens the Commentary on the Image. The full passage relates it to personal conduct or governance in its historical context. Follow the source to read it in full. Applying it to buildings today is Xiaoxiong’s editorial proposal, not a summary of every meaning of the ancient text.
