01 / Building stories

Read a building, discover a way of living.

This municipal library opened in 2013 in two pavilions of El Retiro’s former Casa de Fieras zoo. Part of the old complex became a public place for everyday reading.

As you approach from the park, notice how a visitor’s walk becomes a reader’s pause. A building’s service to an ordinary day is also worth noticing.

Where to look first

Look at the relationship between windows, entrance and seats. Observe the space without photographing readers or recording their personal information.

木上有水,井。

Water is above wood: Jing.

Read the figure first

A shared resource needs access and maintenance. Jing looks beyond a facility to relationships of provision: how do water, knowledge or services reach people, and who sustains that continuity?

Original text and context

The excerpt gives a natural image from the classic. Its application to this building is Xiaoxiong's contemporary proposal, not architectural intent or evidence of historical influence.

Take it into daily life

How can a public place support both a short pause and prolonged concentration?

A question for the Bench

Cultural reading, not divination. The connection is editorial and does not establish historical I Ching influence.

Dining map records within three kilometres in a straight line of the reference point. Walls, railways and slopes may lengthen the journey. Check the entrance and whether the business is open.

The map may omit businesses. Records do not confirm trading status, menus or bookings. Records with an address are shown by default; you can include the others.
