01 / Building stories

One building, the roots of everyday life.

The former royal guards’ barracks was completed in 1730. After fire and restoration, it became a cultural centre in 1983. Its long frontage and courtyards retain an older organisation.

Observe how a space associated with discipline now accommodates learning, performances and meetings.

Standing here, what do you see?

Follow the repeating windows to the entrance and judge scale from an open courtyard.

Zhou Yi · Commentary on the Image · Chinese excerpt

山下出泉,蒙。

A spring emerges beneath the mountain: Meng.

Read the figure first

The spring begins a course still to be discovered. Meng lets us acknowledge what we do not yet know, then compare guesses with labels, materials and observation. Asking is part of visiting.

Original text and context

The excerpt gives a natural image from the classic. Its application to this building is Xiaoxiong's contemporary proposal, not architectural intent or evidence of historical influence.

Clues in the space

Similar windows can conceal different institutions and public uses.

Take it into daily life

An unfamiliar space can be the beginning of a question.

A question for the Bench

What would you start learning here?

Go to the Bench →

Cultural reading, not divination. The connection is editorial and does not establish historical I Ching influence.

03 / Nearby life

After the building, a meal close by.

Find a table nearby · filters and directions →

Dining map records within three kilometres in a straight line of the reference point. Walls, railways and slopes may lengthen the journey. Check the entrance and whether the business is open.

The map may omit businesses. Records do not confirm trading status, menus or bookings. Records with an address are shown by default; you can include the others.
