01 / Building stories

One building, the roots of everyday life.

The iron market opened for food provisions in 1916 and became a gastronomic market in 2009. A shared roof keeps the idea of a market while its uses change.

The operator has documented reopening after the 2026 conservation work. Notice how stalls, passages and communal space work together.

木上有火,鼎。

Fire is above wood: Ding.

Read the figure first

Wood and fire give transformation an image. Ding also suggests a supporting vessel: an old space can hold new activities when structure, use and care work together.

Original text and context

The excerpt gives a natural image from the classic. Its application to this building is Xiaoxiong's contemporary proposal, not architectural intent or evidence of historical influence.
