01 / Building stories

One building, the roots of everyday life.

Fire destroyed the old Alcázar in 1734. Philip V commissioned a new palace, with its foundation stone laid in 1738. Its façade reveals the order of a royal residence that retains official uses.

Start with the exterior from public space. The building's history and whether you can enter today need separate checks.

What to look for on site

Look for repeated windows, columns and balconies. Where does symmetry hold, and how is the centre emphasised? Choose one specific detail.

Read the figure first

Looking depends on position and prior experience. Guan invites description before interpretation. Moving to another permitted viewpoint or reading a source may change a first impression.

The excerpt gives a natural image from the classic. Its application to this building is Xiaoxiong's contemporary proposal, not architectural intent or evidence of historical influence.
