01 / Building stories

Read a building, discover a way of living.

The steps before the doorway already change the visitor’s viewpoint. The heritage record associates the church’s main body with late-seventeenth-century works, while most interior decoration belongs to the eighteenth century. An older font and elements bearing the date 1573 recall an earlier church.

Behind the restrained façade, gilded carving, tiles, stucco and marble shape the interior. Different materials and periods make this neighbourhood church readable in layers. It remains a religious space, so observation must respect the people using it.

What to notice

From the street, examine the relationship between steps and doorway. If entry is permitted, compare one wall material with the interior light. Keep quiet during worship.

02 / I Ching reflections

Lü · Understand boundaries before entering

Lü encourages care in movement, voice and distance. A building visible from a public street may hold other people’s prayers and everyday lives.

Start with the architecture

Steps separate the street from the entrance, making arrival gradual. Doorway, central passage and side spaces serve different activities. The church’s order also depends on the space visitors and regular users leave for one another.

Bring the question into everyday life

Keeping a passage clear, choosing when to ask a question and seeking permission before photographing are practical forms of respect. If you cannot enter, read an exterior wall carefully and leave the interior for another occasion.

Try an observation here

Read the notices before entering, lower your voice and ask whether photography is allowed.

What gesture expresses respect when you enter someone else’s everyday space?

A contemporary cultural reading by Xiaoxiong inspired by the I Ching. The connection with the building is an editorial perspective, not the architect’s intention or a documented historical influence. It is not fortune-telling.

03 / Nearby life

Dining map records within three kilometres in a straight line of the reference point. Walls, railways and slopes may lengthen the journey. Check the entrance and whether the business is open.

The map may omit businesses. Records do not confirm trading status, menus or bookings. Records with an address are shown by default; you can include the others.
