01 / BUILDING HISTORYFACTS BEFORE INTERPRETATION
The marquises created the palace core
and home, gardens and culture continue together.
Around 1670 João de Mascarenhas, first Marquis of Fronteira, and his wife created the central palace and Terrace of the Liberal Arts. Major work followed in 1670–1673 and after 1755; palace, gardens, estate and woodland are a National Monument.
