01 / How this building reached the presentFACTS BEFORE INTERPRETATION
Home, workshop and museum
The Morais e Castro family commissioned Carrancas Palace in 1795. The Neoclassical building combined a residence with gold and silver thread manufacturing.
After other uses, it hosted The Work of Soares dos Reis exhibition in 1940 as the museum moved here. The ordered façade also invites questions about how domestic and working spaces were separated.
Notice the façade’s floor divisions from the pavement. Inside, compare circulation between rooms with the exhibition layout.
