01 / Building stories
Read a building, discover a way of living.
Designed by José Luiz Monteiro in the late nineteenth century, this residence combines romantic expression with domestic arrangements. Leandro Braga and Luigi Manini contributed to its decoration. Following restoration, it opened to the public in 2022. Walking through it also reveals a private home becoming a public cultural experience.
What to notice
Look at frames, decoration and connections between rooms for the scale of everyday life.
Beauty can guide attention and obscure use. After admiring craftsmanship, ask how the room supported living.
Start with the architecture
Compare the distant silhouette with a door or handrail at close range. The first reveals character; the second shows craft entering daily life. Connections between rooms deserve attention too.
Bring the question into everyday life
A door frames a view and controls passage; a window creates a pattern and admits light. Relating decoration to these tasks moves beyond an impression of beauty towards a more precise understanding of use and maintenance.

Choose a detail you would bring home. Where would it go, how would you use it and would you care for it?
Which detail would you keep for your own home?
A contemporary cultural reading by Xiaoxiong inspired by the I Ching. The connection with the building is an editorial perspective, not the architect’s intention or a documented historical influence. It is not fortune-telling.
