01 / BUILDING HISTORYFACTS BEFORE INTERPRETATION
Built in less than two years,
it has rehearsed ensemble for more than two centuries.
Designed by José da Costa e Silva, it was built in 1792–1793 and opened on 30 June 1793. Its Italian-inspired elliptical hall, five tiers of boxes and later annexes support Portugal's operatic tradition; it has been a National Monument since 1996.
