01 / Building stories

Read a building, discover a way of living.

Rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, the former town hall retains an inscription dated 1764. It later served postal, police and library functions, became a museum in 1990 and expanded into the neighbouring former winepress building in 2007.

Read it from the square: how does a public building accommodate changing duties? Notice the relationship of entrances and windows to shared space.

The museum announced temporary closure from 28 September 2026 for a new exhibition, with reopening to be announced. Plan an exterior visit for now.

What to notice

Compare the entrance, windows and places to pause in the square.

02 / I Ching reflections

Ding · Holding new purposes

Ding suggests a relationship between a vessel and what it holds. An old building needs changes in circulation and care when it receives new purposes. Preparation takes time. A temporary closure reminds us of less visible work behind public access.

Start with the architecture

Read the façade from the square; do not enter work areas during closure.

Bring the question into everyday life

What small change could give a space you already have a new use?

Try an observation here

Note two public duties the building has held.

What deserves preservation when a purpose changes?

A contemporary cultural reading by Xiaoxiong inspired by the I Ching. The connection with the building is an editorial perspective, not the architect’s intention or a documented historical influence. It is not fortune-telling.

03 / Nearby life

A nearby table

Dining map records within three kilometres in a straight line of the reference point. Walls, railways and slopes may lengthen the journey. Check the entrance and whether the business is open.

The map may omit businesses. Records do not confirm trading status, menus or bookings. Records with an address are shown by default; you can include the others.
