01 / Building stories

Read a building, discover a way of living.

Municipal information records the original church’s foundation by Cardinal Henrique in 1558 and its rebuilding after the fire of 1887. Today’s simple lines should not automatically be read as the sixteenth-century form. Preserved or subsequently acquired sacred art connects the interior to other periods.

At Alto do Castelo, observe how the slope shapes streets and space outside the entrance. If access is available, compare a clearly identified older object with the present building. If closed, the exterior and setting still offer a useful reading.

Do not turn the straight-line distance from the riverside museum into a promise of step-free access. Slopes, steps and your condition matter when choosing the visit.

What to notice

Compare the space before the church with hillside streets and the presence of the rebuilt landmark.

02 / I Ching reflections

Fu · Beginning again after loss

Returning does not necessarily recover an earlier form. Rebuilding preserves connections while introducing choices; both loss and continuity deserve attention.

Start with the architecture

The elevated setting and simple facade organise the view. Describe visible doors, walls and streets first, then use sources to distinguish foundation, fire and reconstruction.

Bring the question into everyday life

Fu asks what deserves to continue. After change, we may recover a use or rearrange relationships without pretending nothing was lost. Which memory could you care for through an action today?

Try an observation here

Note one source-backed historical event and one visible detail you cannot date from appearance alone.

When beginning again, would you preserve objects, uses or relationships first?

A contemporary cultural reading by Xiaoxiong inspired by the I Ching. The connection with the building is an editorial perspective, not the architect’s intention or a documented historical influence. It is not fortune-telling.

03 / Nearby life

A nearby table

Dining map records within three kilometres in a straight line of the reference point. Walls, railways and slopes may lengthen the journey. Check the entrance and whether the business is open.

The map may omit businesses. Records do not confirm trading status, menus or bookings. Records with an address are shown by default; you can include the others.
