01 / Building stories

Read a building, discover a way of living.

Lisbon merchant José Aprígio Gomes built this residence in 1903. The municipality identifies it alongside Casa Roque Gameiro as an early house surviving the urban expansion of the 1960s and 1970s. The surrounding neighbourhood changed scale, but the house preserves another layer of time.

It now accommodates Galeria Municipal Artur Bual. Once a family space, it invites people to view art, pause and talk. Read façade and exhibition together: how can a house keep its character while opening to more people?

What to notice

From the public street, compare height, setback and entrance with surrounding buildings. Inside, notice how exhibitions use former rooms.

Turning a house into a gallery changes relationships too: who can enter, speak and stay on equal terms? These questions shape a common space.

Start with the architecture

A threshold once separating family and outside now receives visitors. Is the entrance easy to identify, the information welcoming to newcomers and the room suitable for different viewing rhythms?

Bring the question into everyday life

Shared interests do not require identical answers. Offer your judgement as an observation and give others room to add experience. Ask what they noticed before deciding whether to revise your first interpretation.

Try an observation here

Look at an artwork you do not yet understand, read its explanation and ask a companion what they see. Allow two different answers.

What kind of public space would encourage you to share a thought with a stranger?

A contemporary cultural reading by Xiaoxiong inspired by the I Ching. The connection with the building is an editorial perspective, not the architect’s intention or a documented historical influence. It is not fortune-telling.

03 / Nearby life

A nearby table

Dining map records within three kilometres in a straight line of the reference point. Walls, railways and slopes may lengthen the journey. Check the entrance and whether the business is open.

The map may omit businesses. Records do not confirm trading status, menus or bookings. Records with an address are shown by default; you can include the others.
