The building’s historyFACTS BEFORE INTERPRETATION

Casa das Pedras · Stone House

Commissioned by Manuel de Azevedo Gomes from Nicola Bigaglia, the house was completed in 1904. The owner required stones and pebbles in cladding and decorative details. Its castle-like appearance belongs to modern summer-house architecture, not the Middle Ages.

兼山,艮。
Mountains together: Gen.

Gen draws attention to knowing where to stop. Stone suggests permanence, while a private house sets limits on curiosity. Looking does not confer possession.

01

Texture and time

An enduring appearance does not remove the need for maintenance. Stone changes too.

02

Limits of appearance

Battlements evoke the past without replacing the documented date of 1904.

03

Restraint in looking

What can be seen does not define where one has a right to enter.
