João Martins de Barros bought the old Forte da Cruz in 1894 and built a residence, completed in 1896. Architect César Ianz used towers, arcades and battlements to evoke a medieval fortress. Overlooking Tamariz beach, the chalet expresses the historical imagination of summer-house architecture.

See a home’s castle-like silhouette from the Tamariz promenade
Stay on the public Tamariz promenade. Notice the silhouette, then the arcades and windows. Does the castle impression come from structure, ornament or its position above the sea?

The position of this readingChalet Barros uses a castle image to imagine a home. Bi asks form and use to be read together. Admiring its silhouette requires hearing its construction date and distinguishing appearance from military history.

山下有火,贲。 Fire at the foot of the mountain: adornment.
Bi helps distinguish appearance and use: battlements create an image while a residence holds a different life. Appreciate the form while leaving room for facts.
01
A borrowed period
Towers and battlements evoke the Middle Ages while the residence dates from the late nineteenth century. Bi keeps both periods visible: form can quote the past and needs explanation.
02
Appearance and use
A castle-like silhouette can express imagination and identity; it cannot establish medieval warfare. Reading residence, former fort and later construction separately prevents an image from replacing history.
03
The limits of looking
The public promenade already allows comparison of silhouette, arcades and windows. Curiosity about form grants no right to enter private grounds. Appreciation has boundaries too.
