01 / Building stories

From this place, understand a way of life.

The basilica and Carmelite convent arose from Maria I's royal vow, with designs by Mateus Vicente de Oliveira and Reinaldo Manuel. It keeps the tombs of the queen and her confessor and has been a National Monument since 1910.

Late 18th century — The royal vow drives construction of the basilica and convent.

Completion — Late Baroque, Rococo and Neoclassical forms shape twin towers and dome.

1910 — The basilica and tombs receive national protection.

Where to look first

From the garden side, look at the dome and façade together, then move closer to examine the stonework and entrance. Comparing distant and close views helps explain how the building acts as a neighbourhood landmark.

02 / I Ching reflections

Why do we read this votive church through Zhong Fu?

Zhong Fu locates trust in coherence between inner intent and outward action. The building makes a promise visible and testable.

Read the image first

Invisible wind leaves a response on water, suggesting a relationship between inner and outer. Zhong Fu tests promises through action: an image may inspire trust, but continuing care sustains it.

The vow becomes work

Design, material and years of building give a word physical form.

The tombs preserve human limits

Death remains within the monument and checks the confidence of power.

A private wish enters the city

Garden, parish and skyline take the building beyond royal possession.
