01 / Building stories

From seeing to understanding.

The council approved the site in 1889 and the arena opened on 18 August 1892. Brick, Neo-Moorish arches and domes made an urban landmark, later adapted for multiple uses.

1889 — The council approves a new arena at Campo Pequeno.

1892 — The building opens on 18 August.

21st century — Rehabilitation adds a versatile venue and new public uses.

What to notice

Walk around the exterior to see the red brick, arches, domes and arrangement of entrances. The venue hosts different activities, so check the day's programme and ticket requirements before entering. Its exterior also rewards a pause.

Why do we read this arena through Guan?

Guan asks observers to examine themselves. Monumentality, collective memory and animal ethics belong within the same view.

Read the image first

Looking depends on position and prior experience. Guan invites description before interpretation. Moving to another permitted viewpoint or reading a source may change a first impression.

Original text and context

This excerpt gives the natural image that opens the Commentary on the Image. The full passage relates it to personal conduct or governance in its historical context. Follow the source to read it in full. Applying it to buildings today is Xiaoxiong’s editorial proposal, not a summary of every meaning of the ancient text.

The city reinterprets use

Multipurpose adaptation preserves form while changing practice.

Tradition requires examination
