The Coliseu opened on 14 August 1890 with more than four thousand seats. Its German-made iron dome and local engineering created a popular hall for varied programmes.
1889 — Installation begins on the iron dome, spanning a 25-metre radius.
1890 — The hall opens on 14 August.
Today — Opera, circus, music and public gatherings continue to alternate.
Start with the entrance and its relationship to the street. During a performance or visit, look up at the wide-span dome and notice how the seating is arranged around the stage. Interior access depends on the venue's current programme.
