01 / Building stories

Read a building, discover a way of living.

Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard's project advanced in 1900. The lift opened with steam power in 1902 and was electrified in 1907. Its 45-metre iron structure links the Baixa and Carmo and has been a National Monument since 2002.

1900–1902 — The scheme is approved, built and opened on 10 July using steam power.

1907 — Electricity replaces steam and the lift matures as urban infrastructure.

2002 — National Monument status joins everyday mobility to engineering heritage.

Standing here, what do you see?

From street level, look at the iron structure's vertical lines and the connection between the two levels of the city. If you plan to ride, check the queue and operating arrangements on site: straight-line distance does not reveal the height difference.

02 / I Ching reflections

Why do we read this lift through Sheng?

Sheng speaks of gradual progress. Rails, cabins, electricity and maintenance turn vertical separation into repeatable public ascent.

Wood grows within the earth: Sheng. — Editorial translation of the excerpt

Read the image first

Growth begins with support; ascent is not an isolated step. Sheng draws attention to small gains, sustainable rhythms and conditions that allow people to continue.

Technology grows in stages

Steam opening, electrification and maintenance together create a mature system.

Rising first means access

The connection between Baixa and Carmo reduces how completely the slope determines movement.

Structure reveals function

Neo-Gothic detail and ironwork do not hide the machine; they turn technology into streetscape.

Take a question to the bench

When a city speaks of rising, does it first make arrival easier for everyone?

Dining map records within three kilometres in a straight line of the reference point. Walls, railways and slopes may lengthen the journey. Check the entrance and whether the business is open.

The map may omit businesses. Records do not confirm trading status, menus or bookings. Records with an address are shown by default; you can include the others.
