01 / Building stories

From seeing to understanding.

Its first stone was laid in 1711. The plan is attributed to João Antunes and the works to João Frederico Ludovice and Custódio Vieira. Opened in 1736, it suffered limited damage in 1755 and sheltered displaced parishes.

1711 — The first stone is laid on 4 July in a project supported by the Crown.

1736 — The church opens while decoration and adjoining facilities continue to develop.

1755–1847 — It shelters displaced parishes after the earthquake; the church largely survives the convent fire of 1847.

Standing here, what do you see?

Look first at the entrance and façade. When the church is open, step inside to observe its proportions and decorative details. Relating these details to its construction period makes the building more memorable than a single frontal photograph.

02 / I Ching reflections

Why do we read this church through Wu Wang?

Wu Wang asks us to drop invention and meet change with facts, timing and rightful action.

天下雷行,物与无妄。

Thunder moves under Heaven: Wu Wang. — Editorial translation of the excerpt

Read the image first

Thunder moves across the world and each thing answers in its own way. Wu Wang asks us to set assumptions aside: before a building that has been through upheaval, first see what it kept and what changed, then ask what it means.

Original text and context

This excerpt gives the natural image that opens the Commentary on the Image. The full passage relates it to personal conduct or governance in its historical context. Follow the source to read it in full. Applying it to buildings today is Xiaoxiong’s editorial proposal, not a summary of every meaning of the ancient text.

The chronology can be checked

Foundation, opening, earthquake and fire are documented; the story needs no added legend.

Shelter comes after disaster

After 1755, it received displaced communities and turned heritage into public action.

Survival needs maintenance

Repair and use make resilience sustained work, not a fortunate label.

Take a question to the bench
