Igreja e Convento de Nossa Senhora da Luz

01 / Building stories
In the later fifteenth century pilgrimage grew around the first hermitage. Infanta Maria, daughter of Manuel I, promoted the new church, begun in 1575 and consecrated in 1596 as a major Mannerist work; after damage in 1755, parts including the front were rebuilt.
Later 15th century — Devotion and pilgrimage grow around the hermitage.
1575–1596 — The church sponsored by Infanta Maria is built and consecrated.
After 1755 — Earthquake damage brings repair and a rebuilt front.
From the square, look at the white façade and the relationship between the church entrance and neighbourhood walking routes. Compare changes before and after the earthquake. Inside, respect worship and posted access guidance.

木上有水,井。Water is above wood: Jing. — Editorial translation of the excerpt
Original text and context ↗A shared resource needs access and maintenance. Jing looks beyond a facility to relationships of provision: how do water, knowledge or services reach people, and who sustains that continuity?
This excerpt gives the natural image that opens the Commentary on the Image. The full passage relates it to personal conduct or governance in its historical context. Follow the source to read it in full. Applying it to buildings today is Xiaoxiong’s editorial proposal, not a summary of every meaning of the ancient text.
Repeated arrivals turn a hermitage into a regional centre.
Damage in 1755 shows the vulnerability of a common centre.
Church, market, streets and neighbours organise life together.
Take a question to the bench
Who maintains a community's “well”, and how does it remain available to later arrivals?
Go to the bench and note what I saw →A contemporary cultural interpretation by Xiaoxiong. The diagram and excerpt have a source; the building connection is editorial, not architectural intent, historical I Ching influence or the venue’s position.
