01 / Building stories

From this place, understand a way of life.

Opened in 1573, it is among Portugal's earliest Jesuit churches. Its hall church and eight side chapels express Counter-Reformation planning; the 1587–1589 painted ceiling survives. After the Jesuits' expulsion, the complex passed to the Misericórdia in 1768.

1573 — The church opens with a broad nave for preaching and collective liturgy.

1587–1589 — Francisco Venegas and collaborators complete the large Mannerist painted ceiling.

1768–1905 — Church and residence pass to the Misericórdia; the São Roque Museum opens in 1905.

Where to look first

Remember the restrained façade, then look at the nave, side chapels and painted ceiling inside. The contrast invites a slower comparison of materials, light and decoration. Respect people using the church for worship.

02 / I Ching reflections

Why do we read this church through Tong Ren?

Tong Ren asks how public relationship grows across difference. São Roque gathers liturgy, art, charity and visitors within an enduring common space.

Read the image first

A shared space can accommodate differences without giving everyone the same place. Tong Ren directs attention to participation, voices that are heard and differences that remain.

The nave brings people into presence

The broad hall organises speech, sight and ritual within a shared assembly.

Chapels retain identity

Different images, materials and patronage coexist; union does not erase difference.

Mercy extends public purpose

Since 1768, stewardship has linked religious heritage, urban assistance and culture.

Take a question to the bench

When we say “community”, do we seek sameness or agree to work across difference?
