01 / Building stories

From this place, understand a way of life.

João V sponsored the complex between 1743 and 1750. It housed several monarchs, was shelled during the 1910 revolution and became the Foreign Ministry headquarters around 1950.

1743–1750 — Palace, church and Oratorian house are built together.

1833–1910 — The complex serves as a royal residence and is repeatedly adapted.

1910–1950 — Shelling closes the royal phase; the Foreign Ministry later moves in.

Standing here, what do you see?

Look at the façade alongside its history as a royal residence, a site of revolution and the Foreign Ministry. The building remains in institutional use. Follow signs when observing or photographing it, and check interior access separately.

02 / I Ching reflections

Why do we read a diplomatic palace through Song?

Song places conflict within rules and judgement. The move from shellfire to diplomacy shows dispute returning to language.

天与水违行,讼。

Heaven and water move in different directions: Song. — Editorial translation of the excerpt

Read the image first

Different directions can bring disagreement. Song invites clear conditions and responsibilities from the outset, with room to listen and revise. A building’s boundaries can prompt us to ask whose voice is heard.

Original text and context

This excerpt gives the natural image that opens the Commentary on the Image. The full passage relates it to personal conduct or governance in its historical context. Follow the source to read it in full. Applying it to buildings today is Xiaoxiong’s editorial proposal, not a summary of every meaning of the ancient text.

Functions and regimes change

The palace adapts to different institutions and authorities.

1910 marks a limit

Force shows how escalation wounds shared heritage.

Diplomacy moves before rupture

Negotiation, protocol and text seek an exit before violence.

Take a question to the bench

When disagreement arrives, do we seek victory or preserve the chance to keep speaking?

A contemporary cultural interpretation by Xiaoxiong. The diagram and excerpt have a source; the building connection is editorial, not architectural intent, historical I Ching influence or the venue’s position.
