01 / Building stories

Read a building, discover a way of living.

Around 1670 João de Mascarenhas, first Marquis of Fronteira, and his wife created the central palace and Terrace of the Liberal Arts. Major work followed in 1670–1673 and after 1755; palace, gardens, estate and woodland are a National Monument.

c. 1670 — The palace core and Liberal Arts Terrace take shape.

After 1755 — Reconstruction and enlargement follow the earthquake.

Today — Family residence and cultural access coexist.

What to notice

Follow the permitted visiting route around the pool, gardens and tiled terrace, noticing how the images unfold as you walk. Private residence and heritage access have distinct boundaries. Check booking requirements and accessible areas before visiting.

02 / I Ching reflections

Why do we read this family palace through Jia Ren?

It is both residence and cultural institution. We read Jia Ren through responsibility in shared life and mutual respect when a private home opens to the public.

风自火出,家人。

Wind arises from fire: Jia Ren. — Editorial translation of the excerpt

Read the image first

Shared life depends on repeated small acts. Jia Ren becomes a question about care and responsibilities: who prepares, who cleans and who can rest? Order should make its sustaining labour visible.

Original text and context

This excerpt gives the natural image that opens the Commentary on the Image. The full passage relates it to personal conduct or governance in its historical context. Follow the source to read it in full. Applying it to buildings today is Xiaoxiong’s editorial proposal, not a summary of every meaning of the ancient text.
