01 / Building stories
Designed by José da Costa e Silva, it was built in 1792–1793 and opened on 30 June 1793. Its Italian-inspired elliptical hall, five tiers of boxes and later annexes support Portugal's operatic tradition; it has been a National Monument since 1996.
1792–1793 — The Neoclassical opera house is rapidly built and opens on 30 June.
1888–1933 — Additional spaces adapt production, administration and audience facilities.
1996 — National Monument status protects both building and continuity of use.
Outside, notice the theatre's scale in relation to the street. During a performance or visit, observe how the elliptical auditorium and tiers of boxes face the stage. Check the theatre's published access arrangements before visiting the interior.

Follow the source to read it in full. Applying it to buildings today is Xiaoxiong’s editorial proposal, not a summary of every meaning of the ancient text.
After rapid construction came two centuries of rehearsal, production and maintenance.
Orchestra, singers, technicians and audience cooperate to complete the work.
The ellipse and tiers direct sight and sound towards a common centre.
