01 / Building stories

Read a building, discover a way of living.

The house occupied by the library once belonged to Quinta de Nossa Senhora do Monte do Carmo. The heritage record notes that a fire in 1992 destroyed its interior partitions. Adaptation for public cultural use followed, and the library opened in 1997.

The former chapel became a reception area for readers and some historic elements remain. The exterior recalls a residence, while the interior supports reading, searching and staying. An old façade does not mean that an entire historic domestic interior survives behind it.

What to notice

Within permitted areas, notice the connection between house, courtyard and reception. Respect quiet reading where people are using the library.

02 / I Ching reflections

Meng · Make room for learning

Meng acknowledges the starting point of not knowing. Seeking evidence, listening and revising an idea are steps in learning for which a library provides space.

Start with the architecture

Adaptation had to reconcile an old house with new reading needs. Work after the fire shows that preserving walls and preserving interiors are different matters. Notice how readers find reception, shelves and seats.

Bring the question into everyday life

Frame a question, seek a reliable explanation and try expressing it in your own words. In an unfamiliar city, investigating one small subject may change your way of seeing more than memorising a long attraction list.

Try an observation here

Bring a question about Odivelas and look for a lead in the catalogue or with staff.

What small thing would you like to learn properly?

A contemporary cultural reading by Xiaoxiong inspired by the I Ching. The connection with the building is an editorial perspective, not the architect’s intention or a documented historical influence. It is not fortune-telling.

03 / Nearby life

A nearby table

Dining map records within three kilometres in a straight line of the reference point. Walls, railways and slopes may lengthen the journey. Check the entrance and whether the business is open.

The map may omit businesses. Records do not confirm trading status, menus or bookings. Records with an address are shown by default; you can include the others.
