Designed by Jean Colson, the new customs house was inaugurated in 1869. It now accommodates museum and conference uses. River, street and storage offer three clues to the former customs house. Start with the building’s length beside the river, then choose an exhibition.

The vessel image informs our reading of the customs house. Its riverside volume prompts thoughts about capacity, but appearance alone cannot establish each room's former function.
The change of use described above supports the metaphor. Here, Ding connects goods and gatherings; at the monastery, it connects old space and new voices.
Exhibitions and events may open different areas. An open front door is not permission to explore the entire building.
