01 / How this building reached the present
Work on the former prison and courthouse began in 1767. It now houses the Portuguese Centre of Photography.
The design is by Eugénio dos Santos e Carvalho. Notice how doors and corridors controlled movement, and how exhibitions now invite visitors into those spaces.
