New voices in an old monastery
01 / How this building reached the present
In 2007, spaces at São Bento da Vitória were assigned to Teatro Nacional São João, connecting the monastery with contemporary cultural activity.
Royal permission for construction came in 1598, with a design associated with Diogo Marques Lucas. Religious life and the performances later housed in parts of the complex offer two ways to read the building.
