A city held in layers of stone

The cathedral’s Romanesque core dates to the 12th century. A Gothic cloister and Baroque alterations added other architectural layers.

João I and Philippa of Lancaster married here in 1387. From the forecourt, look across the rooftops: this high ground also helps you read the city.

Two mountains form the image of Gen. Here, stillness invites travellers to recognise their position and boundaries before acting. This is our reading, not the only interpretation of the classical text.

Why read Gen at the cathedral?

Pause: do not rush past a landmark

From the square, look at the towers, stonework and entrance. Their solidity prompts our reflection on stillness; a visual resemblance is not evidence of a historical connection to the I Ching.

Position: notice the boundaries

A square, a threshold and a place of worship are different spaces. Before entering, notice where visitors may linger and where quiet is appropriate.

Change: stillness does not freeze time

The Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque layers described above show transformation. In our reading, pausing means noticing those differences, not expecting the city to stay unchanged.

Observe on site

Pause without blocking the entrance. Find a solid stone wall, an opening and people crossing the square. How do solidity and movement coexist? No entry to paid or restricted areas is needed.
