Construction of Nicolau Nasoni’s church began in 1732. Its oval plan offers another way to understand a landmark often recognised by its tower. The tower makes the complex recognisable from afar. Close to the oval church, look for a different scale: the transition from street to entrance and interior.

Guan prompts a question: does changing position mean understanding more? The tower draws the eye, but reading the building can begin at street level.
The oval church plan described above reminds us of what a distant photograph cannot explain. Reading the whole keeps the tower’s prominence from replacing an understanding of the church.
If you are able to climb, return afterwards to the street. Our reading brings wide views and close observation together rather than reducing the city to a silhouette.
