01 / Building stories
Read a building, discover a way of living.
Carvalho Monteiro invited Luigi Manini to shape the estate as a connected world of architecture and gardens. Palace, caves, water and pavilions continually change the view as you walk. Symbols offer clues, but not every circulating mysterious story has historical evidence. Observe the space first, then distinguish documentation from personal association.
What to notice
Follow how a path changes light, visibility and the direction of your body.
A complex symbol need not produce one immediate answer. Separating what we see, what sources support and what we imagine makes observation more precise.
Start with the architecture
Light and darkness, descending paths and renewed views of the sky make the garden a bodily narrative. Record a doorway that changed your view or stairs that changed your breathing. Experience can be concrete even when symbols admit different interpretations.
Bring the question into everyday life
The observer's position affects understanding. Moving may require a revised explanation. Keep three distinct notes: what you saw, what the site's information says and what it made you think of.
Try an observation here
On a permitted route, compare details before and after turning a corner. What new clue changed your interpretation?
Which turn changed your first impression?
A contemporary cultural reading by Xiaoxiong inspired by the I Ching. The connection with the building is an editorial perspective, not the architect’s intention or a documented historical influence. It is not fortune-telling.

The map may omit businesses. Records do not confirm trading status, menus or bookings. Records with an address are shown by default; you can include the others.
